WATKINS JOHNSON WJ 999 is a pressurized water nuclear reactor designed and manufactured by WATKINS JOHNSON Company. The reactor core is made up of zirconium alloy clad uranium oxide fuel elements housed in a carbon-steel pressure vessel. It is cooled with deionized water, which has two different equipment loops, the primary loop and the secondary loop. The primary system loop ensures proper cooling of the nuclear fuel elements and is composed of four low-pressure pumps and four motor-driven high-pressure pumps. The unit also contains four check valves and four regulating and regulating valves. The four pumps are connected together to form a continuous flow loop. The secondary loop is meant to remove heat from the containment vessel and is fed from the primary loop. This loop is made up of four low-pressure feed pumps, four isolating valves, four stop valves, and four headers. The reactor core is made up of 177 fuel elements, eight control elements, and four auxiliary fuel elements. The fuel elements are 11 inch rods containing uranium oxide in a zirconium alloy cladding. They are grouped into eight fuel clusters, four on the top and four on the bottom of the reactor. The control elements act as a safety precaution and serve to regulate the reactivity of the reactor. Two are located in the upper part of the core and two in the lower part. The auxiliary fuel elements are made of heterogeneous materials and are used to increase the reactivity at the beginning of the reactor cycle. The containment vessel is carbon-steel, cylindrical in shape, and open at the top and bottom for the fuel and control element assemblies. It also contains three refueling tubes and two maintenance openings. The primary and secondary coolant systems are fed into and out of the containment vessel through a pressure vessel, and the piping is designed to manage the pressure of the machine. The reactor is equipped with a range of safety systems and features. These include a passive failsafe scram tool, a containment asset to capture and contain any radioactive material released during an accident, an instrumentation model, and other safety related systems. The scram equipment is triggered if any parameters exceed their safe limits and the reactor is shut down. The instrumentation system monitors all of the parameters of the reactor and provides the control room with information about the state of the reactor. WATKINS JOHNSON WJ999 is an economical, small-scale reactor that is safe and reliable for use. It is an ideal choice for various reactor projects and applications, such as research and medical applications.
