WONIK IPS Maha SP is a heavy water, natural uraniam fuelled, pressurised light water reactor. The reactor is particularly suited for small and medium sized power plants due to its compact design, making it suitable for deploying in locations that have limited real estate. The reactor has two safety redundancies depending on the core design, either an emergency core cooling equipment or a highly conservative and robust physics package. The reactor has a capacity of 900 MWe and is classified as a Generation III+ nuclear reactor due to its modern safety features. Maha SP reactor is based on a pressurised light water design with heavy water and natural uraniam fuel. The primary coolant is typically pressurised light water at a temperature of 310°C. A secondary pressurised water loop is a feature of the reactor design, which acts as a steam generator and has a power capacity of up to 1750 MWt, depending on cycle and thermal efficiency. The plant achieves a cycle efficiency of 33-41%, burning natural uranium and producing less waste in comparison to other light-water reactors. The main purpose of the reactor is to generate electricity, capable of producing 900 MWe. This can be further increased by using higher moderator fluxes. Furthermore, WONIK IPS Maha SP is capable of fuelling a range of fuel cycle patterns, including once-through (OT), Th-U-233, Th-Pa, U-Mo dispersed fuel and core reloads. This versatility allows the plant to be updated more frequently than other light-water reactors, due to the simple design of the fuel cycle that does not require significant modifications. Safety is one of the main priorities when designing and operating reactors and Maha SP is no exception. The plant contains a variety of safety features to minimise any potential risks, including a Reactor Protection System (RPS) to monitor the reactor parameters at all times and detect any significant changes in the unit. Additionally, the reactor is constructed with an LERF of >= 7. In the unlikely event of an accident the plant features an emergency core cooling machine, utilising high pressure natural water which is pumped directly through the core to limit the damage of the reactor. WONIK IPS Maha SP pressurised water reactor is an efficient, cost effective and safe reactor that can be deployed in locations with limited space and resources. The design features of the reactor make it ideal for a range of fuel cycle patterns and the high reactor safety features offer an optimum level of protection, making it a reliable and durable choice for present and future power plants.
