Plasma reactor.
YAMATO PR200 is an experimental reactor created as part of the Japanese national renewable energy research program. It was built by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, and placed in the National Institute for Fusion Science for operation and maintenance. PR200 is a high-field tokamak-type fusion reactor with a toroidal shape and an open-ended port in the center that houses the plasma. This central port typically hosts two cylindrical iridium-platinum divertor coils used to allow the plasma to safely exhaust its heat and particles. The reactor design also features a strong toroidal-field coil, a superconducting ohmic heating coil, and a vacuum vessel. YAMATO PR200 has a maximum plasma pressure of 0.9 gigapascals, and a major radius of 0.38 meters. Its configuration allows the reactor to generate a maximum plasma current of 2.2 million amperes, with a maximum plasma temperature of 200 eV. This results in a plasma confinement time of 240 seconds and an average power gain of 33.4%. PR200 is also equipped with a variety of diagnostics to assess the plasma in its operations. Its diagnostic package includes synchronized Mirnov B-dot and Mirnov F-dot probes, along with high speed video cameras, interferometry and reflectometry systems, and a gas puff imaging system. These diagnostics allow the reactor to measure all key plasma parameters and compare them against predicted values. The reactor experiments conducted on YAMATO PR200 aim to better understand the underlying physics of the fusion reaction. To this end, the reactor can operate in steady-state, pulse-modulated, or ramped-up scenarios. This enables the reactor to simulate various plasma conditions and increase our understanding of the phenomena driving the fusion reaction. PR200 is an important component of the scientific effort to create practical energy from controlled nuclear fusion. As we continue to research the physics of plasma and the possible benefits of clean and limitless energy, YAMATO PR200 will prove to be a key player in the quest for fusion energy.
