Critical Dimension Scanning Electron Microscopes (CD-SEM)
2004-2006 vintage.
KLA / TENCOR ECD-1 (Environmental Corrosion Detector-1) Scanning Electron Microscope is an advanced instrument used to assess corrosion damage by providing a comprehensive 3D profile of corrosion on metallic and coated surfaces of structures and components. This state-of-the-art instrument combines an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) with the option of a controlled atmosphere and humidity chamber, enabling the assessment of corrosion damage under a variety of conditions. KLA ECD1 utilizes an ESEM to collect high resolution topographical images of components and structures down to the nanometer scale. The instrument's high resolution imaging capabilities allow precise visualization of surface features and physicochemical composition of bodies. It uses secondary electron imaging (SEI) to represent nano-information using imaging contrast. The ESEM mode also allows observation of specimens in their native environment (referred to as "in-situ"), as well as the study of hydrated and frozen samples. The environmental chamber of TENCOR ECD 1 allows users to study corrosion dynamics in their native environment. The relative humidity range of the chamber can be adjusted from 0-100%, allowing users to observe corrosion mechanisms under different conditions. The chamber is also equipped with an air circulation system, enabling atmospheric control within the chamber and oxidation and corrosion simultaneous to the SE imaging. In addition to ESEM imaging, TENCOR ECD-1 is capable of coronal analysis of specimens using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). EDS provides precise data regarding the composition of the specimen, enabling users to identify and quantify different elements present in the sample. Combined with other advanced analytical and characterization methods, KLA ECD 1 can be used to accurately assess the level of corrosion damage on metallic and coated surfaces within a variety of environments. Its high-resolution imaging capabilities and environmental control provide a comprehensive 3D profile of corrosion damage and enable researchers to effectively assess the performance and condition of components and structures.
