PHILIPS / FEI Quanta 400 is a scanning electron microscope (SEM) that utilizes electron-beam-induced secondary electron imaging for obtaining highly detailed, highly magnified images of a sample. It is capable of magnifications up to 400,000x, allowing users to see features as small as 1nm in size. When coupled with the optional Everhart-Thornley equipment, FEI Quanta 400 can also operate as a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). PHILIPS Quanta 400 features a diascopic full-field digital imaging system, which allows the microscope to produce high-resolution images of sample surfaces. It has two separate tilt stages, one for horizontal rotation and one for vertical rotation. This allows the operator to precisely adjust the tilt of the sample, which is essential for acquiring high-quality images. In addition to the diascopic digital imaging unit, Quanta 400 contains a cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging machine. This tool allows for the visualization of sample characteristics that are not visible with a standard SEM. CL imaging can be especially useful for obtaining images of mineralogical features and for investigating the optical properties of materials. PHILIPS / FEI Quanta 400 is powered by a high-performance field emission gun (FEG) electron source, which produces a high-energy beam of electrons which is then focused on the sample surface. The beam current and beam diameter can be customized for each specimen, allowing for maximum flexibility when operating the microscope. FEI Quanta 400 is remarkably versatile, and can be used for a variety of research applications. It is commonly used by industrial and academic researchers for fail analysis, chip failure analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), imaging of biological specimens, and nanometer-scale characterization. Overall, PHILIPS Quanta 400 is an excellent scanning electron microscope which provides researchers with high-resolution images and precise control of the electron beam. Its CL imaging asset and FEG electron source allow it to produce unique, informative images of specimens down to the nanometer level.
