PHILIPS / FEI XL 30 is a high-performance scanning electron microscope (SEM) that uses a tungsten filament to generate electrons. The electrons travel to an anode and are focused and accelerated by an electrostatic lens. The electrons pass through apertures and grids to prevent any particles from entering the sample due to their mass. The electrons are then focused into a beam which is used to scan the surface of a sample. This scanning process allows the image to be formed on a phosphor screen inside the detector.The detectors then convert the incident electrons into visible light which is imaged on the screen. FEI XL 30 has a high-resolution imaging capability that allows the user to examine samples in detail. The microscope has a high magnification which ranges from 20x to 500,000x. The microscope also offers a variety of advanced imaging functions such as EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) which allows for the analysis of chemical composition in samples and IAD (Ion Accelerated Detections) which allows for the detection of high frequency radio waves. The microscope is equipped with an automated stage which can be used to shift and orient samples in three-dimensional space. This allows the user to scan multiple areas of a sample without manual adjustment of the sample stages. In addition to its imaging capabilities, PHILIPS XL30 offers a suite of qualitative and quantitative data analysis tools which allow the user to further explore the data collected. A few of these tools include: CrystalDiffract, which allows for the examination of crystalline materials, Peak Detect which allows for the determination of peak positions, and MAPS which enables scientists to view and analyze spatial maps.
