ATIS AW 09-0505 is an Automated Weather Station (AWS) operated by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It is located at a coastal station near Greys Harbor in Washington State, and provides surface atmospheric conditions in real-time. The station recorded its first data in 2009, and remains in operation today. The AWS is instrumented for several environmental parameters such as wind speed, direction & gusts, barometric pressure, temperature, air pressure, relative humidity, and dew point. All of this data is transmitted on a 10-minute interval to a NOAA data center for processing and storage for public use. The observatory also includes a precipitation gauge that measures rain, snow, freezing rain, and melted snow. All precipitation intensity is recorded in millimeters per hour (mm/h). AW 09-0505 also serves as a supplemental site for a NOAA tide gauge. The NOAA NOS Greys Harbor observatory serves as the primary tide gauge site in the local area, and within the basin. While ATIS AW 09-0505 site may supplement this data, it is not equipped to measure the full range of data parameters available at the Greys Harbor observatory. ATIS AWS is also part of the Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS) which is headquartered in the United Kingdom. This organization was established to monitor relative sea level change on a global scale in order to help scientists to understand the effects of climate change. As part of the GLOSS network, AW 09-0505 station records pressure observations which can be used to calculate the relative sea level in the local area in relation to other sites around the world. ATIS AWS also plays an important role in aviation and maritime safety. Data disseminated from the station is included in aviation forecasts used by commercial airlines, as well as in coastal meteorological warnings used by maritime operators. This helps to ensure safe and smooth travel for pilots and mariners in the local area. Overall, ATIS AW 09-0505 station is vital to a variety of fields. Its data helps to inform local decisions on climate change, maritime safety, aviation safety, and even sea level rise. As such, the station is an invaluable part of NOAA's mission, and continues to provide reliable data for an ever-burgeoning number of applications.
